On Friday morning, June 6th, there was a public ceremony at Wichita’s Veterans Memorial Park at the WWII Memorial downtown along the banks of the Arkansas River, commemorating the 81st anniversary of D-Day.

D-Day was the Allied invasion of France and Western Europe to take back the countries occupied by Nazi Germany.

The ceremony began with the National Anthem, an invocation, and recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.  A wreath was placed at the WWII Memorial, and the Master-of-Ceremonies offered a few remarks.

"Taps" was sounded to conclude the ceremony.

In Abilene, Kansas, at the Eisenhower Presidential Library, events continue with the Symphony at Sunset Annual D-Day Commemoration Concert on Saturday, June 7. Symphony at Sunset features an outdoor concert showcasing patriotic and popular music from the World War II-era, performed by the Salina Symphony and the Fort Riley 1st Infantry Division Band.
