A 14-year-old boy from Wichita was arrested Saturday on two counts of felony murder and one count of a juvenile in possession of a firearm, in connection to Friday night’s shootings in northeast Wichita.
Just before Midnight, Wichita Police responded to the 5200 block of East Kensington, northeast of 13th and Oliver, to the report of shots fired. At about the same time, officers were dispatched to an area hospital for the report of two walk-in shooting victims.
14-year-old Emoni Shears, and 19-year-old Jhiquez Roberts, both of Wichita, died from their injuries.
Wichita Police believe that all parties involved in the incident knew each other and were meeting at the location of the shooting.
The deaths mark the second and third criminal homicides in Wichita this year.
Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan released this statement Saturday: “Receiving notifications about shootings is always disheartening, and it becomes even more saddening when it involves the loss of a child's life. This has to stop. As a community, we must demonstrate to our young people that there are alternatives to violence.”
