The Kansas Department of Transportation has closed northbound I-135 north of 21st Street in Wichita following an overnight train derailment.
KDOT says the bridge carrying I-135 over the rail yard has been damaged. Bridge inspectors are on site conducting a damage assessment. Two columns supporting the bridge have been damaged and the bridge is closed to traffic.
Crews are working to secure supports, and railcars involved in the derailment are being cleared from the area. Once the bridge is secured for inspection and the railcars are removed, KDOT will be able to further evaluate next steps. A timeline for reopening the bridge to traffic is not yet available.
Traffic is being diverted to eastbound K-96 where motorists can turn around on Hillside or Oliver. Be prepared for slowdowns and delays in the area.
