The Wichita City Council unanimously approved a resolution regarding Evergy's proposed energy rate hike. Mayor Brandon Whipple read the resolution Tuesday morning and said it will put a strain on the city, residents and local businesses.

On April 25, Evergy filed a joint application with the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC), Evergy Kansas Central and Evergy Metro, Inc. The net rate increase proposed is 9.77 percent, or an increase of approximately $14.24 per month for each residential customer.

The city estimates that their net increase for lighting and utilities will be approximately 8.3 percent and say that it will have a negative impact on city operations and the community.

The city's resolution will be filed with the KCC, who will accept written comments until September 29.
