The Wichita City Council unanimously voted to repeal a 2008 ordinance that had banned drivers from backing their vehicles into city-owned parking stalls.
Staff recommended keeping the ordinance in place for a number of reasons, citing the thousands of dollars in property damage inflicted by drivers who backed up too far into stalls. They also cited the difficulty for parking enforcement to read the license tag of a backed-up vehicle.
Between October 2025 and April 2026, 340 citations had been issued to drivers for the offense. In late April though, the city started issuing warnings instead.
Despite the repeal, it is still illegal to back into on-street parking stalls.
