The Wichita Police Department says a driver involved in a crash was allegedly speeding.
At about 1:45 a.m. Sunday, officers found an overturned Jeep and a Dodge Challenger at Kellogg & Interstate 235. Two people inside the Jeep had severe injuries and were hospitalized; those victims are expected to survive. The Challenger was unoccupied.
Police interviewed witnesses who reported a car going more than 100 miles per hour before the crash, and seeing the driver flee. Detectives from the WPD Traffic Unit collected the data from the Dodge’s event recorder and determined the car was going 136 m.p.h. before the crash.
Police found the man who had allegedly been driving the Challenger at a nearby hotel.
The case was presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office; the car’s driver is facing two counts of aggravated battery, leaving the scene of a collision, and speeding.
