At Wednesday's Sedgwick County Commission meeting, the board heard a report on the county's fiscal condition for the second quarter of 2022.
Overall, the county's fiscal condition remains sound with healthy fund balances reported. Revenue growth remains strong, in retail sales and use taxes and also in the tax base.
There are several items of concern, including high inflation, rising interest rates, workforce challenges and difficulties in the insurance market.
Worries about recession are valid as well, with two quarters of negative growth in the nation's gross domestic product, or GDP. Brent Shelton, Deputy Chief Financial Officer, says that typically signals a recession but it's usually accompanied by high unemployment, and that's not the case at this time.
