April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. More than 3,500 people were killed in 2021 nation-wide, in accidents involving distracted drivers. Shawn Steward of AAA/Kansas tells KNSS News that number is probably "under reported". What about the Kansas toll? Steward says in 2021 -- the most-recent available numbers -- 81 people died in accidents involving distracted drivers in Kansas.
Steward says AAA has found that a mentally-distracted driver may take as long as 27 seconds to regain his or her attention. He says distractions may include children in the vehicle, conversation, phones, or navigation systems.
