Kansas Highway Patrol troopers investigated a hit-and-run crash Saturday night, where the driver was so intoxicated that he drove on for 30 miles, unaware his airbags had deployed.
The incident happened around 9:45 p.m. Michael Catt of Wichita was slowing down for traffic in the construction zone on I-70 in Geary County when he was hit from behind by a car driven by a Nebraska man, Samual Mertens. Mertens drove past Catt and continued driving for 30 miles as Catt followed and provided updates to KHP dispatch. Troopers stopped the cars in Saline County.
A KHP spokesperson said Mertens was visibly intoxicated, had open beer cans in the car and admitted to drinking before the K-State football game. He was arrested and taken to jail.
Catt and a passenger went to the hospital with minor injuries.
