The call came in shortly before 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening, after a construction crew struck a gas line in the area of north Fountain and Regents, near Oliver and Hillside.  This is near the Wichita State Campus.

Wichita Battalion Chief Lane Pearman says around fifty homes were evacuated, and they received calls about a gas odder from as far as eight blocks away.

"We checked door to door, and along with Kansas Gas Service, we conducted air monitoring with our equipment, to ensure there wasn't any explosive levels of natural gas," Pearman said.

Once the leak was capped, residents were allowed to return to their homes.  There were no injuries.
