Authorities say an escaped inmate died from a self-inflicted gunshot Friday as law enforcement approached.
The Kansas Department of Corrections says Jauwon Allen, a minimum‑custody inmate, was placed on escape status Thursday night when he failed to return to the Wichita Work Release Facility.
Investigators received a tip Friday that Allen was in a home in the area of MacArthur and Meridian in south Wichita. As KDOC agents approached the home and announced their presence, they heard a single gunshot from inside.
The agents requested help from Wichita Police and the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.
When the officers entered the home, they found Allen dead. He was the lone occupant in the home and authorities said no officers fired their weapons.
Allen was serving a 35‑month sentence for a conviction in Sedgwick and Ellis County for criminal threat and obstructing the legal process in a felony case.
