Evergy has backed off its rate increase request for electricity customers in central Kansas, from more than 14 dollars to just over four dollars per month for the average customer. That 14-dollar rate was much higher than the northeast part of Kansas. Wichita Mayor Brandon Whipple tells KNSS News the higher proposed rate would have been unfair and harmful to area individuals, businesses, and schools, which have seen their costs go up by several million dollars in Wichita. The lower rate must be approved by the Kansas Corporation Commission.
At Tuesday's meeting the Wichita City Council will consider several changes that will add to the overall cost of the new water treatment plant, under construction in west Wichita. Mayor Brandon Whipple says the half-billion dollar project is the biggest in the city's history and the project is still under budget. He says water is becoming a big issue for many American cities and Wichita needs to have "the best facility we can."
Whipple commented during Mondays with the Mayor on the Steve and Ted in the Morning Show on KNSS.
