Fatal officer-involved shooting in Kansas City

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting Sunday morning in Kansas City, Kansas. According to the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department around 4 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, a male subject, later identified as 33-year-old Brian Hilt of Kansas City, Missouri, damaged property in order to enter an apartment building. Surveillance video showed Hilt was armed with a firearm.

Around 5:10 a.m., a fire alarm was activated and firefighters from KCKFD responded.  Upon seeing the property damage, officers from KCKPD were requested. A resident of the building called 911 a short time later reporting an armed disturbance. Two officers encountered Hilt in a hallway in the apartment building. Shots were fired after officers claim Hilt disregarded commands to drop the gun he was holding. Hilt sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.

KCKPD requested KBI assistance around 6 a.m. and KBI agents responded to the scene.
