The topic of golf carts was discussed at Tuesday's Wichita City Council workshop.
Currently, it's illegal to operate a golf cart on city streets.
Vice Mayor JV Johnston proposed several changes to the previous ordinance brought forth to the council in mid-January. Some of those changes include allowing golf carts on city streets with a posted speed limit of 30 mph or less. It would require the operator to have a valid driver's license. If the cart is to be driven at night, it must have lights and a slow-moving emblem.
The law department will draft a new proposal, which will be presented at the council's evening meeting on March 18.
The council approved $13.8 million in funding for the first phase of improvements for the Bleckley Drive project.
The east Wichita street floods often, even during modest rainfall events.
Phase 1 of the project will include water, sewer and other utility relocations and reconstruction of the concrete channel and Bleckley Drive between Waterman and Kellogg. Phase 1 will begin in the next 3-4 months and will be completed by 2028.
Future phases of the project to extend drainage improvements from Waterman to Elm Street will be bid out later. The total cost is currently estimated at $36 million.
