Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly issued her first veto of the new year for the bill known as the Help Not Harm Act.
The bill bans gender changing procedures for children under the age of 18. In her veto, the Gov. said in part that "infringing on parental rights is not appropriate."
Supporters of the bill issued a statement criticized the Governor for "choosing partisan politics over the safety and wellbeing of our Kansas children."
Lawmakers can override the veto if they get a two-thirds majority vote in both the House and Senate.
