It began around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon when (WPD) officers responded to the 1200 block of E. Mt. Vernon for a disturbance/abduction call. The officers contacted witnesses who reported seeing two men arguing with a woman and forcibly placing the woman inside a vehicle and leaving the area.

Officers immediately began checking the area for the vehicle, and with the information provided by one of the witnesses following Atkinson’s vehicle, officers were able to locate the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle refused to stop, and a chase ensued.

Officers were able to stop the vehicle after a brief pursuit at the intersection of 10th Street N and Madison. The officers arrested the suspect after a foot pursuit.

The investigation revealed that the suspect, identified as Daivon Atkinson, 26, confronted his girlfriend, 33, over an unknown circumstance. Atkinson told the woman to get in the car, and she refused. Atkins and an acquaintance of the woman grabbed her and placed her inside the vehicle before fleeing the area.

Atkinson was booked on charges of aggravated assault, criminal restrain, eluding a law enforcement officer, reckless driving, and driving while suspended.  In addition, he faces an aggravated assault charge not related to the initial disturbance.

The case will now be presented to the District Attorney’s Office.
