Wichita-based Spirit AeroSystems says it's going to be temporarily laying off about 300 workers, beginning on May 12th.

Spirit reported a loss of nearly $619 million in its first quarter of 2025.

Spirit reported a stock loss of $5.21 per share; losses, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were $4.25 per share. The aircraft parts-maker posted revenue of $1.52 billion in the period. Spirit said the loss was because of lower production on most Boeing programs, particularly the Boeing 737.

Spirit’s backlog at the end of the first quarter of the year was approximately $48 billion.

“We overproduced and accumulated a parts surplus over the last several years. We must reduce and pause productions and implement layoffs,” Joe Buccino, senior director of media relations, said.

The layoffs are limited to the 737 fabrication and composite lines.

Spirit AeroSystems is Wichita's largest employer, with about 20,000 workers.
