The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is handling the case of an officer-involved fatal shooting late Sunday afternoon in the northwest part of Hutchinson.

Officers responded to a residence at 3313 Dartmouth Road, following up on a theft investigation; 30-year-old Jonathan Lawrence was wanted for questioning.

The KBI said Lawrence stepped outside the residence to speak with the officers ,and he was armed with a handgun. The officers tried to detain and disarm him, but the KBI said during a physical altercation he battered both officers before fleeing into the garage.

“One officer deployed a Taser, which caused Lawrence to fall and drop the handgun,” said the KBI in a release. “While the second officer attempted to gain control of Lawrence, Lawrence reached for and regained control of the firearm. The officer who deployed the Taser, drew a service weapon, and fired multiple rounds, striking Lawrence.”

The KBI said officers rendered life-saving measures and responding deputies from the Reno County Sheriff’s Office assisted with medical aid until EMS arrived. Lawrence was taken to the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, where he died.
