
The city of Wichita will spend nearly a million dollars for improvements to parks and facilities in 2024.
The Wichita City Council approved $100 thousand for new park signs at Riverside Tennis Center, the Fairmount Community Center along with several others.
Around $550 thousand will go toward enhancements at Garvey Park, Cessna Park and more.
The city will spend $225 thousand for improvements to the Charles Doughty Jr. Tennis Facility at McAdams Park.
Barry Sanders Field, also at McAdams Park, will get a new grass turf, bleachers and hydration station. The price tag for these improvements is around $54 thousand.
At Tuesday’s meeting, the council also approved holding a few evening meetings in 2024.
Mayor Lily Wu says it is a way to increase civic engagement, a theme she heard on the campaign trail last fall.
The March 19, June 4 and November 19 meetings will be held at City Hall at 6 p.m., instead of the usual 9 a.m.
The council will hold another 6 p.m. meeting on Thursday, August 8, since Tuesday, August 6 is the primary election. This meeting will focus on the 2025 city budget.
The council also changed the starting time of their consent agenda/workshop meetings, which are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month. Instead of starting at 9:30 in the morning, those meetings will now begin at 9 a.m.
