Wichita drivers: your commute may get a little shorter in 2025.
The Wichita City Council approved $1 million to design and implement new signal timings for downtown streets undergoing a conversion from one to two-way. The city will also make improvements at the Kellogg and Rock Road intersection, one of the most congested intersections in the city.
Paul Gunzelman with the city says the project will install additional push buttons and pedestrian traffic signal indications in the median. Pedestrians will cross just half-way across the street, which will shorten the traffic signal time, thus improving the overall efficiency of the intersection.
The council also approved $2.2 million for its Intelligent Transportation System program, to improve Greenwich, north of Kellogg, and East and West 21st streets.
In related news, the council approved their 2025 State legislative agenda.
It will cover topics like public safety and crime prevention, economic development, affordable housing and homelessness, and infrastructure and street repair.
The 2025 Kansas Legislative session will begin Monday, January 13.
