A 65-year-old man was hospitalized in critical condition after police said he was shot while trying to enter a home that wasn’t his, in the southeast part of Wichita.

Police were called to a home in the 900 block of S. Rutan, near Lincoln & Hillside, at 11:10 p.m. Tuesday; officers located a man in the driveway with a gunshot wound to his abdomen.

The man was hospitalized in critical condition, but is expected to survive.

Investigators say the man was intoxicated and banging on a door to a home, believing it was his. The 55-year-old homeowner answered and told the man to leave.

Police said the intoxicated man insisted it was his house, asked for a phone, then tried to enter; the homeowner confronted the man in the driveway.

Police said the homeowner felt threatened by the man’s actions and shot him.
