
Evacuations were necessary Friday in Cowley County as a wildfire burned to the east of Winfield.
Another fire was reported in Sumner County, just south of the Sedgwick County Line. Fire crews say it jumped across Ridge Road before they were able to get it contained.
However, fire crews remained concerned that high wind conditions could cause embers to flare up again.
A fire was reported early Friday morning near Cheney Lake that burned around 80 to 100-acres. Another fire popped up along K-14 in Pleasant Valley that burned around 20-acres of pasture land.
Other smaller files were reported east and west of Hutchinson on Friday.
Strong winds have also snapped power poles with Evergy reporting over 18-thousand customers are without power, with a majority in the Topeka and Kansas City areas. By late Friday afternoon, around 800-customers were still affected in Sedgwick County.
KDOT closed K-254 from I-135 to the Sedgwick/Butler county line due to blowing dust and low visibility.
Among other areas in western Kansas, I-70 was closed in both directions between Goodland and Colby due to blowing dust and multiple crashes blocking the road.
The City of Wichita says there is hazardous air quality in the city due to the high winds and blowing dust.
Particulate matter is over 300, which means air quality is unhealthy.
Motorists are advised to delay non-essential travel until conditions improve.
