The Kansas Humane Society, (KHS). says they are experiencing a crisis situation. Along with the Wichita Animal Shelter (WAS) they are a maximum capacity for dogs, with more arriving each day. WAS is currently taking in a daily average of 19 dogs, while only averaging 11 adoptions per day.

The intake numbers are the highest in a decade. In a news release they say the high numbers are partially caused by the halt in spay/neuter services during COVID-19. Low income families can consider using the services of Spay-Neuter Kansas in Wichita as an option to reduce the out of pocket expences, for those who qualify.
KHS is continuing reduced adoption fees of $49 for most adult dogs, and for long-stay dogs they have a Pick-Your-Price! Adoption fees cover spay/neuter surgery, microchip, vaccines, medication, etc. It costs them over $200 to provide all this for just one dog, but as a nonprofit shelter, the goal is to help local pets find their forever home and make their shelter stay as comfortable as possible.
Adopters are needed so they can continue helping more animals. You can also ask about fostering. They provide everything you need, including food, supplies, medication, etc., while you provide a safe, temporary home for a pet in need. It also helps expand the shelter and provides space to help more dogs!
Since reduced fees don't cover the expenses of care, they also rely on donations to continue helping the animals.
No appointment needed to adopt or visit with available animals.
