The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday night in Topeka.
Around 9 p.m., a Topeka Police officer stopped a man who was riding a bicycle in an alley near 21st Street and SW Buchanan Street.
When the officer returned to his patrol vehicle, the man, identified as Joseph L. Pham-Gardner, 37, of Topeka, climbed on his bike and fled. The officer ordered Pham-Gardner to stop and chased him on foot. The officer caught up to the suspect and a struggle ensued.
During the confrontation, the man threatened to shoot the officer, who fired multiple times striking Pham-Gardner. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
EMS transported the suspect to an area hospital then later to a Kansas City hospital for surgery of non-life-threatening injuries.
The KBI will conduct an independent investigation and will release details to the public when it is concluded. The findings will be presented to the Shawnee County District Attorney.
