The U.S. Department of Transportation announced that a $1.6 million Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity discretionary grant has been awarded to the Kansas Department of Transportation for the I-135 Modernization Study. The study includes 53 bridges, two of which are the largest in Kansas, two interchanges and four pedestrian bridges. It connects to I-35 and the I-235 bypass and carries more than 87,000 vehicles daily. This study will complete a Planning and Environmental Linkages Study to develop options for replacing infrastructure along a 5.5-mile segment of I-135.
"Undertaking this study is an important first step to planning for the future of this regionally significant corridor," said Secretary Calvin Reed. "KDOT appreciates the acknowledgment of this investment by FHWA through the award of the RAISE grant. We look forward to partnering with the City of Wichita and hearing the voices of its citizens as this study progresses."
The study will begin in 2025 and last until mid-2026. During this time, KDOT will have meetings in Wichita for the public to review information and share input on design alternatives being created.
"This is a critical next step for KDOT and our community to enhance safety, improve community connectivity and deliver transportation solutions that serve Wichita and our state," said Wichita Mayor Lily Wu.
RAISE grants provide opportunities for the U.S. DOT to invest in road, rail, transit and port projects across the country. Congress has dedicated nearly $14.3 billion for 15 rounds of National Infrastructure Investments to fund projects that have a significant local or regional impact.
