There's an added danger on the roads this month as deer mating season starts across the state.
The Kansas Highway Patrol shared some tips to help keep drivers safe. They say to be aware of your surroundings, put your phone down and slow down. With sunset arriving sooner each day, make sure that you always have your headlights on once the sun sets.
Most importantly, don't swerve to avoid hitting a deer. Swerving can cause worse accidents including colliding with other vehicles.
If you hit a deer, call 911 or the KHP immediately.
Over 50,000 deer-related accidents have been reported in Kansas since 2020.
