Collaboration was a key theme of a joint meeting between the Wichita City Council and the Sedgwick County Commission Tuesday morning, with a number of projects in the pipeline.
A law enforcement hangar is proposed for Jabara Airport to house KHP and county aircraft, benefiting both the county and the city. A wellness center at 3rd and Broadway in downtown Wichita would address health and wellness concerns for all first responders. Training exercises between Wichita Fire and Sedgwick County Fire units will continue, as officials examine possible consolidation.
Both city and county leaders expressed concerns with Kansas House Bill 2745, passed to provide property tax relief. It faces a veto from Governor Laura Kelly. Mark Manning with the city said they have a number of concerns, including how the bill, if signed into law, would affect debt and bond ratings, infrastructure improvements and operating budgets, notably for public safety.
The next en banc meeting is planned for June 30.
