A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in east Wichita Saturday evening.
It all started a little after 3 Saturday afternoon. Multiple businesses in the northeast part of the city called Police to report a man who was loading and pointing a handgun at vehicles near K-96 and Greenwich. Officers arrived but could not locate the man.
After 4 p.m., the man was spotted near 21st Street approaching Wilson Estates. Over a loud speaker, officers ordered the man to stop but he instead ran into Wilson Estates. An attempt to tase the suspect was unsuccessful. The man ran to a tree line and fired one shot at officers, who backed up and set up a perimeter.
Negotiators tried for hours to contact the man, including offering food but received no response. Police then brought out an armored vehicle and got within feet of the man. They asked him to drop the weapon while trying to give him a communication device. The man had a gun to his head but then pointed it at police. An officer fired one shot, the suspect returned fire, then an exchange of gunfire took place. The man was struck and was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.
The KBI is now leading the investigation. Police believe the man suffered from a mental health crisis.
