A 46-year-old man is in jail after Wichita police say he was firing a gun inside a home near 13th & Estelle early Sunday morning (west of Hillside).
A woman in the home was afraid and contacted a friend; that friend called 911. While the friend was on the phone with her, he told dispatchers he heard gunshots in the background.
The friend said the man in the home was walking around the house and shooting a gun.
Officers were sent to the scene at 6:43 a.m.; they heard gunfire, which helped them locate the home. Officers then set up a perimeter.
The woman in the home stayed in contact with her friend, who continued to relay the information to 911 dispatchers.
Those updates included critical information about when the suspect reloaded his firearm, allowing officers to coordinate their actions more effectively.
The suspect eventually left the house and was arrested. Police say the man was wearing an ankle monitor and was prohibited from having a gun; he was booked into jail.
The Kansas Highway Patrol helped establish the perimeter and checked the home after the incident.
“This situation could have ended in tragedy, but thanks to the exceptional work and collaboration between the Wichita Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol, it was resolved without any injuries,” Wichita Chief of Police Joe Sullivan said in a news release. “The de-escalation techniques and the restraint shown by the responding officers and troopers reflect their training and commitment to protecting our community. I want to commend everyone involved for their outstanding efforts personally.”
