Michael Mire leaves Houston to become Wichita's new Fire Chief

On Wednesday, Wichita City Manager Dennis Marstall appointed Michael Mire as the Wichita Fire Department’s 15th chief in city history following a national search. Mire is expected to take command on August 24th.

Mire is a nearly 30-year veteran of the Houston Fire Department, where he currently serves as an assistant fire chief overseeing the Emergency Response Command. He will replace Chief Tammy Snow, who is retiring.

Mire served in the United States Army from 1993 to 1999, and began his career in fire services as a firefighter/paramedic with the City of New Orleans in 1997.

The Wichita Fire Department serves more than 400,000 residents.

Chief Mire will oversee an $82 million annual budget, and approximately 500 employees. WFD responds to fires and emergencies from 22 firehouses, with a 23rd station expected to come online next year.
