A 40-year-old man from Wichita is headed to prison for the death of an 18-year-old.

Police say Michael Austin, Jr., shot and killed Amyion McDowel-Mitchell. The shooting happened on Sept. 23, 2022, in the 5000 block of E. Osie St., near Oliver & Harry in the southeast part of Wichita.

Investigators said McDowel-Mitchell was shot in the chest during an argument; after being hospitalized, he died the next day.

Austin was charged with second-degree murder in March 2023; this year, he pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter.

The judge sentenced Austin to nearly nine years in prison, ordering him to pay $7,500 to the Crime Victims Compensation Board for funeral expenses.
