Wichita Police say unsafe firearm handling and storage led to three separate shootings across the city.
The first incident occurred Friday night in the parking lot of a Dillon's grocery store in the 9400 block of E. Harry. A 32-year-old man stole a rifle from an unlocked vehicle, and while he attempted to conceal the weapon in his pants, it discharged, injuring him. That man was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. However, he will be booked into the Sedgwick County Jail.
The next two incidents Saturday morning involved negligent firearm handling. Around the 2900 block of S. Glenn, a 50-year-old man accidentally shot himself while handling a firearm. Near the 900 block of S. St. Francis, a loaded handgun being handled by a 17-year-old boy went off inside a vehicle, striking a 17-year-old passenger.
The victims were taken to local hospitals and are expected to survive. Police add that the 17-year-olds have been uncooperative and both incidents remain under investigation.
