Private firm to operate Wichita’s Century II

On a 5-2 vote, the Wichita City Council has approved ASM Global to manage the Century II Performing Arts and Convention Center in downtown Wichita.

The company currently manages 325 venues worldwide, including Intrust Bank Arena and the Orpheum Theatre.

Public comments were split on the issue. Several council members explained that the fate of the building wasn't being determined but the management of it.

A transition period will run from October 1 to the end of the year. After that, the initial 5-year agreement will cost the city $120 thousand per year, with a 5-year renewal possible. In 2019, Century II had an operating loss of $1.4 million.

Mayor Brandon Whipple and Council Member Jeff Blubaugh were the two no votes on the proposal.
