Sedgwick County Commissioners learned how their legislative agenda faired in the 2026 Kansas Legislature.


Property tax relief was at the top of the commission's list. While several reform bills were proposed, nearly all of them failed with the exception of HB 2644. That bill, signed by the Governor on April 6, requires county appraisers to adjust a property valuation if it increases by more than 5% within a year after a finalized appeal.

Commissioner Jim Howell suggested the state needs help with the matter.

Some other priorities for the county included reforms for tag offices and juvenile justice.

Watkins Public Strategies from Topeka leads the county's lobbying efforts. Jessica Lucas, Vice President of the group, said there are many unknowns when it comes to the 2027 legislative session, with a new Governor, Secretary of State, Insurance Commissioner and Speaker of the House taking office.
