The percentage of Wichita residents who feel safe when visiting the downtown area continues to drop despite decreasing crime rates.
In 2016, 82 percent of those surveyed felt safe or somewhat safe during the day. In 2025, that percentage dropped to 73 percent. Stats from Wichita Police say property crimes and violent crimes are both down during that time.
Respondents were also asked what would attract more business and visits to the area. Eighty-three percent said a reduction in the homeless numbers, 82 percent said more attractions and 81 percent said better lighting.
In hopes of moving the needle, the city says improving homelessness services, adding more lighting, reducing vandalism and graffiti and cracking down on street racing and reckless driving are priorities.
