The Wichita City Council has amended city code to allow the sale of aerial fireworks within the city limits this coming Independence Day holiday.

Wichitans will again be allowed to discharge aerial fireworks in the city between July 3 and the 5, along with so-called "safe and sane fireworks" between June 27 and the 5th, from 10 a.m. to Midnight.

The changes mean the city is more aligned with state law regulating fireworks, including making it illegal to ignite fireworks from a bicycle, motorcycle, electric scooter, car or other motor vehicle. It’s also illegal to discharge fireworks within 50 feet of a fireworks stand and Wichitans cannot possess or ignite non-consumer grade fireworks.

Enforcement teams comprised of police officers and fire fighters will patrol the city over the holiday to enforce the new rules.
