The Sedgwick County Commission approved a $10.3 million settlement in the in-custody death of Cedric Lofton.

Lofton was restrained at the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center in September 2021. He lost consciousness and died a few days later.

In January, a jury ruled in favor of Lofton’s family, awarding $8.3 million against county corrections employees, plus attorney fees.

Commissioner Ryan Baty says the settlement is a hopeful step forward toward healing.

The money will come from the county’s general fund.
