The Sedgwick County Commission delayed a vote on increasing fines.

Before the board Wednesday was a resolution that would have created a new fine class for violations of county codes. Currently, the maximum fine the county can levy is $500 but the new class would have allowed for the creation of a $1000 fine.

Nearly all of the commissioners wanted to delay a vote on the resolution, citing the need to understand the issue better. Jim Howell was the only commissioner who did not want to delay a vote.

Chairman Pete Meitzner made a motion to defer the item for 60 days, which passed 4-1.

Commissioners also voted to defer until a future date a resolution that would have fined persons who discharged firearms across property boundaries.

In other county news, the board voted to establish the ICT 21 Redevelopment TIF district. The vote follows the city of Wichita's approval last month that will bring commercial and industrial development to the former refinery site at 21st Street North and I-135.

The county also approved their 2022 legislative agenda, highlighted by funding for mental and behavioral health issues.
