Sedgwick County Commissioners have voted in favor of a $2 million pledge to a facility expansion project planned for the Child Advocacy Center.

Diana Schunn, CEO of the CACSC, told commissioners the facility expansion at 1211 S Emporia Street would help them serve more victims and sooner.

Schunn told commissioners they've seen a 30% increase in cases of abuse over the last 4 years, with nearly 60% of the victims under the age of 12.

The facility expansion project will cost around $12.8 million and should be completed by 2026.

Commissioners also approved a one-time $100 thousand funding support for the Wichita based non-profit NXTUS organization, who assists startup companies in the state.

The county also come to an agreement with KDOT, who will study the K-15 corridor between I-135 in Wichita to 95th Street South in Derby.

Commissioner Jim Howell serves District 5, including the K-15 corridor and Derby, and is ecstatic to see this study finally move forward. It will take a look at crash rates, traffic delays resulting from rail operations and roadway capacity limitations with a goal of improving safety and traffic flow.
