Sheriff Jeff Easter said Deputy Sidnee Carter died in the crash at the intersection of 29th Street North and 135th Street West around 9:30 p.m. Friday. Easter said Carter was driving south on 135th Street when her vehicle was struck by a west-bound vehicle on 29th Street that failed to stop at the stop sign. The driver of that vehicle, 28-year-old Kelvin W. Burgett, 28, of Prescott Valley, Arizona, was transported to a Wichita hospital with serious injuries.

The 22-year-old deputy had worked for a year and a half at the Sedgwick County Detention Facility before transferring to the Law Enforcement Bureau in February 2022. Deputy Carter graduated from the Law Enforcement Academy in July.
