Solid waste fees in Sedgwick County will go up in 2022.
Residential, commercial and industrial users will see a 10 cent increase next year. For example, a residential property owners' bill will rise to $7.90 and those fees will be collected through property taxes.
Commissioner David Dennis said some residents don't like seeing this fee on their taxes but added: "I think it's probably the most efficient way of getting this fee, because it isolates exactly how much we get. We don't spend more than that. We don't make a profit off of it. We don't roll it over into the general fund if we got anything left."
The fees partially fund county programs like the household hazardous waste collection site, which collected nearly 1.8 million tons of waste in 2020. In addition, the county set up collection sites for tires, electronic waste, and other recycling efforts.
