The Sedgwick County Zoo is launching a capital campaign called "Our Growing Herd,” with a $10 million goal to fund expansion of the Elephant boma.
Five females are pregnant and expected to deliver new calves between March and September of 2025. Winter temperatures are too cold for young elephants, which is part of the reason behind the expansion plans.
Scott Newland, President and CEO of the Zoo spoke at the Sedgwick County Commission meeting Wednesday. He says they are thrilled about expanding the indoor facility.
Ground breaking is expected in the Fall of 2025 following the delivery of all of the calves. The project should be completed by Fall 2026.
