The Wichita City Council voted on Tuesday to select a new council member for District III.
Five candidates were up for the seat vacated by James Clendenin, who resigned in December: Jared Cerullo, Cindy Miles, Virgil H. Miller Jr., Joseph Shepard and George Theoharis.
The winning candidate needed 4 votes to win the seat. Council member Cindy Claycomb voted for Cindy Miles, while Bryan Frye, Jeff Blubaugh and Becky Tuttle voted for Jared Cerullo. Vice Mayor Brandon Johnson and Mayor Brandon Whipple both cast a vote for Joseph Shepard. Because none of the candidates secured 4 votes, it went to a second vote. And a third and fourth. After the fifth round, no candidate got the required amount of votes, meaning the council will vote again at the next scheduled meeting on March 16.
