Severe storm threat for July 4th

National Weather Service/Storm Prediction Center

Severe weather brought high winds and heavy rain Saturday morning.

Several wind damage reports have been received from Marion County, northeast of Wichita. Power lines were downed south of Goessel, power was out in the city of Marion and a 60 mph wind gust was measured near Peabody. Earlier in the morning, a carport was damaged in Newton and around 8:30, these storms produced a wind gust of 74 mph at the Hutchinson Airport.

Wind damage was also reported in El Dorado, where a tree fell onto a vehicle. A 56 mph wind gust was measured at the El Dorado Airport.

More thunderstorms are possible late this afternoon and into the evening. The Storm Prediction Center has placed parts of south central Kansas in a level 3 out of 5 risk for that additional threat. Large hail, high winds and heavy rain will be the biggest concerns. While the tornado risk is very low, it is not zero.

Please keep track of the weather if you have plans at the lake, in downtown Wichita or in your backyard.
