Police said a 43-year-old suspect involved in a multi-hour standoff with law enforcement personnel shot himself as he surrendered Friday around 8:30 a.m. near Kellogg & Armour in E. Wichita.
Police said it started with a vehicle pursuit on the west side of town near Central and I-235. Officers said the vehicle refused to stop; they later located the vehicle near Lincoln & Emporia. Through tips and information, they learned the suspect was at a hotel near Kellogg and Armour.
Police made contact with the suspect, who had an arrest warrant for aggravated indecent liberties; the suspect made threats of violence. The SWAT team was called to the scene, and negotiated with the man for hours before he surrendered.
“The suspect, who was armed with the handgun, grabbed the handgun and then shot himself,” said Wichita police officer Paul Cruz.
The man was hospitalized with critical injuries.
Police said they worked to use time and distance to try to negotiate with the man.
The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is also involved in the case.
