It happened just before 11:30 p.m., as the students were returning home from storm chasing in Kansas earlier in the evening. The student's vehicle hydroplaned on I-35 in Kay County, Oklahoma near Tonkawa and was struck by a semi-trailer.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol identified the victims as Nicholas Nair, 20, of Denton, Texas, the driver of the vehicle; Gavin Short, 19, of Grayslake, Illinois; and Drake Brooks, 22, of Evansville, Indiana.

The University of Oklahoma released a statement saying they were “devastated to learn of the tragic passing of three students. Each were valued and loved members of our community.”
