As temperatures rise, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment is urging residents to be cautious as tick activity increases. Spring and early summer mark peak season for ticks, raising the risk of bites and exposure to illnesses like Lyme disease and other tick-borne infections.

Health officials recommend simple preventive steps when spending time outdoors. Wearing long sleeves and pants, applying insect repellent, and thoroughly checking your body, clothing, and pets for ticks after being outside can significantly lower your risk. Promptly removing any ticks is also important to help prevent disease transmission.

In addition, keeping yards tidy by mowing grass regularly and clearing away leaf litter can reduce tick habitats around the home.

Officials stress that staying aware and taking preventive measures are the best ways to stay safe during tick season.
