Tornado hits northeast Kansas community

Residents in Marysville, Kansas are cleaning up after a tornado ripped roofs off buildings and left debris scattered around the downtown area.

The tornado struck the community around 6:10 p.m. Saturday. Marysville Chief of Police Matt Simpson says no injuries were reported.


According to the National Weather Service, there were reports of at least four industrial buildings damaged or collapsed with power lines down and phone lines inoperable.

U.S.-36 was shut down for a time while emergency crews worked to clean up the debris.

Marysville is located in northeast Kansas, near the Nebraska state line.

The same storm tracked south into the Manhattan area, causing damage there as well. An 83-mph wind gust was measured at a Kansas Mesonet weather station near the city. There were also reports of golf ball-size hail with the storm in Olsburg in Pottawatomie County.

The storm complex began in southeast Nebraska and tracked south into Kansas, before eventually dissipating over northeast Oklahoma.
