If you've noticed exposed trash at the construction and demolition landfill near K-96 and West Street in northwest Wichita, you're not alone.
Susan Erlenwein, Director of Sedgwick County's Environmental Resources, told County Commissioners Wednesday that these type of landfills have strict regulations from the state. She explained they have 120 days to cover up the trash, or sooner if they receive a large amount. She also added the landfills are responsible for picking up trash that's blown away, up to a half-mile away from their facility.
Commissioner Lacey Cruse says she's received several calls in the past couple of months regarding the exposed trash along the north side of the landfill facing K-96.
Erlenwein said that Wichita's Brooks landfill on the north side of K-96 has an even larger area of exposed construction debris. Motorists on the highway can't see it, as the debris rests on the north side of the facility.
