The criminal case against a former Sedgwick County detective will move forward.

A judge heard a preliminary hearing Friday to determine if there was significant evidence against former detective Shawn McMahon.

McMahon was charged last July for two counts of making false statements and one count of interference with law enforcement. He was assigned to the Internet Crimes Against Children section within the Exploited and Missing Children’s Unit.

A review by the sheriff's office revealed improper case closures and a failure to thoroughly investigate criminal complaints between 2019 and 2024.

The hearing will take place on Aug. 13.
